What Does Oil Do and Why are Oil Changes Important?

The oil in your car lubricates the mechanical components of your engine. Without oil, your engine would run dry and eventually burn up causing a serious malfunction that could destroy the engine entirely. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend an oil change every couple of months or when driving a certain amount of mileage, usually anywhere between 3,000 and 10,000 miles. All vehicles have different oil change intervals so it is important to know your vehicle's schedule and to keep track of when your next oil change is due.

Keep in mind, that just because there is oil in your car, doesn't mean that it will be sufficient for months to come. Oil thins over time and turns black. If it isn't changed, it will make your engine run rough, which can cause failure, hence why the oil change appointments are necessary and most of all important for the operational integrity of your vehicle.

How to Check Your Own Oil

Checking the oil in your car is easy and anybody can do it. Here is an easy step-by-step process to checking your oil levels and cleanliness.

  1. Be sure that your vehicle engine is off, and has been inactive for at least ten minutes (The engine needs to be cool)
  2. Pop your hood and lift it open, make sure it is secure before you let go, then locate the dipstick ring. It's usually yellow in color
  3. Pull out the dipstick completely and wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel
  4. Re-insert the dipstick back into the reservoir and pull it back out
  5. Check and measure the oil at the tip of the stick. There are level indicators to show the amount of oil flowing through your engine - the oil should be somewhere between the indicators.
  6. Re-insert the dipstick and make sure it is fitted tightly before slamming the hood shut.
Take a good look at the color of your oil at the tip of the dipstick. You want to see a goldish brown color for a healthy engine. If it is black or has a brown dirty film, then it's time to change your oil.

How our Expert Technicians Change Your Oil

First, our technicians will check the oil levels in your car and visually check the condition of the oil. They also check your mileage to see which type of oil will be most beneficial to your car. Next, they will drain the oil from your car and replace the oil filter, so the next batch of oil will not run through the previous dirt and grime caught by the filter. The last step is refilling your engine with fresh oil, and restarting your car to make sure the oil pressure is where it needs to be.
