Things to Do in South Padre Island

South Padre Island has always been a classic beach town. With miles of soft sand, dolphin cruises, and diverse wildlife, it’s equal parts relaxing and exciting. While South Padre Island has earned itself a reputation as a hotspot for spring break shenanigans, it’s so much more than just a party town.

So what are the best things to do in South Padre Island?

Hit the Beach

This may be obvious, but with miles of white sand beaches and 24 public access points, no trip to South Padre Island is complete without a day under the sun. Beach Access #11 Treasure Island Circle, considered by many to be South Padre Island’s best beach, is a family-friendly option with restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. The beach is close to shops and restaurants when you need a break from the water. Gulf Circle (Beach Access #3) and Sea Island Circle (Beach Access #4) are other popular choices. With 24 to choose from, you’ll find a beach that has what you need.

Take a Dolphin-Watching Cruise

One of the most popular things to do in South Padre Island is taking a dolphin-watching cruise. The Laguna Madre Bay side is home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, which means you’re practically guaranteed to see dolphins while you’re on the water. There are several operators that run daily cruises, but the sunset versions are especially good. Think dolphins, golden light, and even fireworks shows on Friday nights during the summer.

See Turtles at Sea Turtle, Inc.

Sea Turtle, Inc. is a rescue and rehabilitation center that rehabilitates between 40 and 100-plus turtles per year. With the success of the center, the facility has just expanded into a 15,000-square-foot hospital. Visitors can tour the facility, watch surgeries through viewing windows, and meet the turtles that can’t be released back into the wild. It’s educational without being dull, and the conservation work is genuinely impressive.

Visit Sandcastle Trail

A free, ever-changing public art installation right on the beach, Sand Castle Trail exhibits elaborate sand castles by local and international artists. Holiday Sand Castle Village, led by artist Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga, provides the largest collection of sand castles in one place, but you can follow this map to see where all the best sand castles are located.

Want to learn how to build your own sand castle? You can take a class to learn how to sculpt sand like the pros.

Go Kayaking and Paddleboarding on the Laguna Madre

The bay side of South Padre Island is calm, shallow, and sheltered, which makes it an ideal location for beginners. Rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of many vendors and explore the mangrove shorelines. You can also book a guided eco-tour that will take you through the channels and teach you about the local ecosystem.

Fly High while Parasailing

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, you’ll find a number of opportunities for parasailing. Most rental places offer 30- to 45-minute sessions, with options to go solo or fly tandem. The views from 600 feet above the water are stunning and sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Ride a Horse on the Beach

Enjoy scenic views of the island on horseback with horseback riding tours from Island Adventure Park. Choose from sunrise, sunset, and even moonlit beach rides for maximum romance. The tours last between 60 to 90 minutes, and no riding experience is necessary, though kids must be at least 6 to ride.

Enjoy Nature at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary

The name is a mouthful, but the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center, and Alligator Sanctuary on the bay side provides a unique experience for visitors. Walk the boardwalks through native wetlands, spot herons, roseate spoonbills, and other coastal birds, and meet the sanctuary’s alligators up close. The center provides regular birding tours and daily events.

Take a Fishing Trip

South Padre Island is a serious fishing destination. Book a bay charter for trout, flounder, redfish, and snook, or a Gulf charter for deeper action. Whether you’re experienced or a complete beginner, you’ll find a charter catered to your skill level.

Previously known as Schlitterbahn Waterpark, the Beach Waterpark sits right on the beachfront and offers slides, a lazy river, and splash zones for younger kids. It’s open seasonally and provides a nice break from saltwater without leaving the sand entirely.
