3. Out-of-State Vehicles: Vehicles registered in another state without a reciprocity agreement with Texas require a temporary permit to be driven legally within the state. 

4. Commercial Vehicles: If you’re operating a commercial vehicle in Texas without proper registration, temporary permits (like 72-hour or 144-hour permits) can be obtained for short-term operation.

The Different Types 

• One-Trip Permit: This permit allows the movement of an unregistered, empty vehicle from one location to another within Texas. • 30-Day Permit: Designed for vehicles that need temporary registration, this permit is valid for 30 days. The cost of this permit is $25 along with the non-refundable $4.75 assessment fee.

• 72-Hour Permit: This permit allows commercial vehicles to operate in Texas for 72 hours. It’s often used by out-of-state trucks hauling goods into or through Texas. There’s a $25 fee to purchase this permit along with a $4.75 non-refundable processing and handling fee. This fee covers the cost of processing the permit. 
• 144-Hour Permit: Similar to the 72-Hour Permit but valid for 144 hours (six days), this permit is also for commercial vehicles operating temporarily in Texas. The fee for this permit is $50 along with the non-refundable $4.75 assessment fee. 

How To Get a 30-Day Temporary License Plate Online in Texas

Obtaining a 30-Day Temporary Permit in Texas is a straightforward process, though unfortunately it requires an in-person visit. You can’t purchase it online. This permit is needed for operating vehicles that are unregistered or have expired registrations, providing a legal means to drive while arranging permanent registration. 

To acquire this permit, you’ll need to visit your local county tax assessor collector’s office or a Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) Regional Service Center. Before your visit, ensure you have the necessary documentation: a completed Application for Timed Temporary Permits (Form VTR-66), proof of valid liability insurance meeting Texas requirements, and a current government-issued photo ID. This permit is available for passenger vehicles, private buses, trailers, motorcycles, and semitrailers with a total weight not exceeding 10,000 lbs. Once issued, the permit is valid for 30 calendar days from the effective date and must be prominently displayed in the rear window of your vehicle.

Do You Need One If You Buy a Car From a Dealership?

When purchasing a vehicle from a Texas dealership, the dealer typically provides a temporary license plate. This is known as a buyer’s temporary tag. This tag allows you to legally drive the vehicle while the dealership processes the title and registration paperwork on your behalf. The buyer’s temporary tag is usually valid for up to 60 days, during which time you should receive your permanent license plates and registration sticker. It’s important to ensure that the vehicle has passed the necessary state inspection, as this is required for registration in Texas. If you’re purchasing a vehicle from a private seller or an out-of-state dealer, you may need to obtain a temporary permit to legally operate the vehicle in Texas until it’s properly registered. 

How and Where To Display It 

You’ll need to display your temporary license plate properly to avoid fines when driving in Texas. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) requires that temporary tags be securely attached on the rear license plate area of your vehicle. You’ll also need to make certain the entire tag is visible and easy to read at all times. Make sure no part of the tag is covered by plate holders, frames, or any other materials. 

If your vehicle doesn’t have a rear window or a proper rear license plate spot, you should keep the temporary tag inside the vehicle and be ready to show it if asked.
